ASM-ACC Focus Workshops 2012

Location: Autism Collaborative Center, located at the old Fletcher School. 1055 Cornell, Ypsilanti, MI 48197
Description: A series of six workshops designed to assist parents, educators, and community service providers who support persons on the autism spectrum.

Each of these trainings is $25.00; for non-ASM members and $20.00 for a current ASM member.

Each of these trainings will be held at the Autism Collaborative Center, located at the old Fletcher School. 1055 Cornell, Ypsilanti, MI 48197

Time: 9:30am – 3:30pm consisting of a 1 hour lunch break and two 15 minute breaks

Lunch is registrants’ responsibility but coffee, tea, juices, water and breakfast breads and pastries will be provided.

A Workshop for Paraprofessionals & Direct Care Staff: How to Implement Supports for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder – February 23rd, 2012
This workshop will provide an update of the current research about Autism Spectrum Disorder, a toolbox of visual, social and sensory supports and strategies that will aid in reducing anxiety, as well as an overview of behavior as communication in order for participants to look at challenging behavior and then reframe the behavior and communication.

Homeschooling for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder - March 22nd, 2012
This session will explore the reasons to homeschool and the pros and cons of homeschooling your child in Michigan, look at the many resources that are available for homeschooling, and provide an overview of Project Based Curriculum that can be used to teach in a homeschool. Presenters: Kathy Johnson and Lori Swan

Transition to High School and the Implementation of a Personal Curriculum– April 26th, 2012
This workshop will define the meaning of a personal curriculum and answer the most frequently asked questions about this modification to the Michigan merit Curriculum as well as explore transition services through the IEP to prepare the child for life after public school. This may include preparing the child to live on his own, learning adaptive skills, exposing the student to a variety of job-related experiences, taking into account the student’s interest and/or higher education.
