Description: The Autism Society of Michigan is pleased to announce we will be traveling to Traverse City and St. Ignace to offer a series of focus workshops to help educate individuals, families and profes-sionals about autism spectrum disorder and related aspects that will help those have a better understanding of what autism spectrum disorder is and the strategies, tools, and supports that are available to help those diagnosed succeed.
St. Ignace, MI - Deadline for registration is May 1st, 2012 ____ May 3rd, 2012: Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder—9:00a.m. to Noon ____ May 3rd, 2012: Visual and Social Supports—1:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. ____ May 4th, 2012: Advocacy and the IEP—9:00a.m. to Noon ____ May 4th, 2012: Transitions—1:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. Registration fee per workshop is $15 for non-ASM members and/or $10 for current ASM members. You may register: by mail with payment by check or online at www.autism-mi.org Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorders This workshop will focus on the diagnosis and characteristics of autism spectrum disorders; the relationship between anxiety, sensory issues and behavior challenges, as well as practical strategies to help students with ASD make sense of their educational and social environment. Both Autism and Asperger Syndrome will be discussed. Presenters: Kathy Johnson and Anne Carpenter from Autism Society of Michigan. Advocacy and the IEP This session will provide strategies for the development and implementation of your student’s IEP. The presenter will address how to develop a meaningful IEP that included communication, socialization, and sensory goals and objective. Tips on how to successfully advocate for your child will be presented from the perspective of a Mother with a child on the autism spec-trum and from a professional advocate. Presenters: Kathy Johnson and Lori Swan from Autism Society of Michigan Visual and Social Supports This workshop will focus on: learning the importance of visual and social skill supports throughout the lifespan of an individual with autism spectrum disorder; practical examples and samples will be shown and discussed. Presenters: Kathy John-son and Lori Swan from Autism Society of Michigan. Transitions This final session will focus on identifying the strengths and the needs of young adults with autism spectrum disorders as they transition into the vocational or college world. Some of the discussion topics will include Person Centered Planning, how to access community resources, how to apply for SSI/SSDI and/or college and alternatives to guardianship.
